Where Conservation Meets Connection: Why Places Like Salmon Creek Matter

At Occano, the experience of the land is everything. It’s the quiet of early morning on the course, the rhythm of the tides, and the feeling that you’re part of something bigger than the round you’re playing. That same sense of connection is what drives conservation efforts across coastal North Carolina—efforts that are shaping the future of how we live, play, and explore this region. One of the most compelling examples right now is the preservation of the Salmon Creek Natural Area in Bertie County.

A Landscape Worth Saving

The Salmon Creek Natural Area spans more than 1,200 acres of protected land, featuring miles of riverfront, cypress-gum swamps, freshwater marshes, and hardwood forests—all recognized for their ecological significance.

But what makes it truly remarkable is not just its natural beauty—it’s the story behind it.

Originally slated for a large-scale residential and marina development, the land faced a very different future. Instead, through a bold and collaborative effort, the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust stepped in, acquired the property, and ultimately transferred it to the state—ensuring it would be protected for generations to come. Today, it stands as a rare example of what’s possible when conservation, community, and long-term vision align.

 Where History and Nature Intersect

Beyond its environmental value, Salmon Creek may also hold clues to one of America’s oldest mysteries—the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Archaeological findings, including Native Algonquian artifacts and early English materials, suggest the area could have been a refuge for settlers in the late 1500s. It’s a reminder that these landscapes aren’t just scenic—they’re layered with stories still being uncovered.

 Why This Matters to Occano

At Occano, we believe great golf destinations are defined by more than design—they’re defined by place.

The same elements that make Salmon Creek worth preserving—untouched wetlands, coastal ecosystems, and a deep sense of history—are what make eastern North Carolina such a compelling destination for golf and outdoor experiences.

As more travelers seek out meaningful, nature-connected getaways, places like Occano—and protected lands like Salmon Creek—are part of the same movement:

  • prioritizing stewardship over short-term development
  • creating experiences rooted in authenticity
  • and ensuring the landscape remains the star

This is the future of golf—and coastal living.
